According to the
Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard
University, 6.5 million homeowners in 2001 were
paying more than half of their income to afford
housing, compared to 8.8 million in 2006—a major
jump that shows more families straddling the
line between safe homeownership and barely
getting by.
